I received a mailing from Teresa Sullivan notifying me of her upcoming exhibition at the Mesa Arts Center in Mesa, Arizona from January 22nd to March 14th. Entitled Station Identification, it is a solo exhibit narrating “the stories of people discovering their own special powers and abilities. From the super heroines found in comic books and science fiction novels to the real mentors in her life, the tiny, delicate beads that are used to create her pieces become transformed into bold, self supporting artworks.”

Teresa and I met at a Split Rock Arts session with Joyce Scott. I love how she’s incorporated what we learned in that week into her work.

This show, in the Cargill Gallery of the Central Hennepin County Library, is on display until January 3rd.  It is presented in partnership with mnartists.org, an online database of Minnesota artists created by the Walker Art Center and the McKnight Foundation. “The 14 Minnesota artists in the exhibition explore issues of nature, simulation, craft, collection and fantasy through a broad range of materials and processes.”  Attached are pictures of those items that appeal to me most.

Here’s the second installment of pictures from this show, just ended at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul.  These are Jo Wood’s works.  She expertly creates these detailed beaded scenes on handmade wool felt.  I have always loved Wood’s beadwork, and her use of color and stitch placement and direction makes beautiful art.  I saw some of the pieces at a show earlier this year at The Grand Hand, and it was a treat to revisit them. (My earlier post on that visit.)

As a disclaimer, the light was quite low, and these pictures were taken without flash and hand-held, with very slow shutter speed.  The case was lit from the top, and the pieces on the lower shelf was particularly difficult to photograph (which is why I could only get details of a couple of pieces).

I took pictures of this show, just ended at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul.  Nine area artists showed their interpretations of “shiny” in a mixed-media exhibit.  The exhibit features more than 70 works ranging from metal and glass (beads!), to art books and textiles.  I will be covering this in two parts – one of Jo Wood’s works, and one of some of favorites of the other pieces.  As a disclaimer, the light was quite low, and these pictures were taken without flash and hand-held.

Here are some of those favorites:

Halliday-Aphrodite

Aphrodite’s Dilemma Too by Carolyn G. Halliday, hand knit wire

Mahfood-3

Bernadette Mahfood, micromacrame for the first two pieces, fused glass for the last.

Beetlephilia: Stag Beetle by Robyn Beth Priestley, mixed media book cover/shadowbox with handmade and imported paper, paint, polymer clay, found objects

Bead International, a biennial bead exhibit well-regarded by the bead community, will not be held in 2010.  The Dairy Barn website says that if funding and increased support are received, that it may be held in the future.

It’s hard to see the effect of the economy on the arts communities.  One bead museum gone, another fighting (and winning!), and now Bead International.  Please support the arts as you can!

———————————–

edited to add: Jill Smalley is exhibits director at Dairy Barn.  Nan C Meinhardt has spoken with Jill, and Jill suggests that those upset with this loss to contact her at jill@dairybarn.org.  Please contact Jill and let her know how much you value Bead International as the excellent forum it is for innovation in the art of beadwork.  It isn’t possible to have it for 2010, but tell Jill how important it is to you as an artist, as inspiration, as a goal for yourself as an artist, whatever your reasons.  Please!
