<p>Okay, I want to go to the hardware and/or surplus store again!  This brand new book is great fun.  I have used rubber grommets, rubber O-rings, and pyrex connectors as parts of jewelry &#8212; and seen cotter pins and other non-jewelry components used in jewelry.  The author of this book, Nichole Noelle Sherman, has a collection called <a href="http://www.nicolenoelle.com/softhardwear.html" target="_blank">Softhardwear</a>, which she describes in depth in this book with many examples.  Some pieces are heavier than what I&#8217;d wear, but still fun to look at.  Check it out at your library, maybe&#8230;.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I taught a hemp and cowrie shell necklace class for children and teens today.  It&#8217;s a lot of fun!  I had kids ages 7 to 17 or so, nine total.  The mom of the youngest was there to help.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s my advice for teaching to children.  First, pick something that is forgiving.  Fringe bracelets, Oglala butterfly are great for seed bead projects.  Both allow mistakes to be made without being glaring.  I taught spiral rope once (twice?) to kids, and once you mess that up, it&#8217;s really obvious.  This hemp class works as we don&#8217;t do much knotting &#8212; so if the student forgets to do right over left for the first part of the knot, and left over right for the second, it really isn&#8217;t going to start spiraling on them if there&#8217;s only one full knot.</p>
<p>Pick something where they have some design control if you can.  I&#8217;ve taught a couple of classes where I talk some about color choices and design, give them ideas for how to choose color combinations, etc.  I think they really enjoy it, and then feel more secure in their own choices.  I bring beads (what else?!) to put between the cowrie shells, and they pick the beads.  They vary the color and/or number of beads, as well as the number of knots (for those who picked up the knotting easily).</p>
<p>Bring books for the students to enjoy browsing, bring samples, don&#8217;t go longer than 1.5 to 2 hours &#8212; and enjoy yourself!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In <a href="http://www.dulceyheller.com/wordpress/but-is-it-art-session-1/" target="_self">session 1</a> and <a href="http://www.dulceyheller.com/wordpress/but-is-it-art-session-2/" target="_self">session 2</a> of this series on contemporary art, taught by Dr. Patricia Briggs, from the <a href="http://www.mcad.edu/" target="_blank">Minneapolis College of Art and Design</a>, we met in a library, and she showed us slides and talked about the progression of contemporary art.  For this last session, we met at the <a href="http://www.walkerart.org/index.wac" target="_blank">Walker Art Center</a> for a tour of selected pieces.  Dr. Briggs said she was going to show us her favorite pieces; we had an hour, saw a lot, and only touched the surface of the museum.</p>
<p>The galleries that we visited are organized sequentially, earlier styles first.  The first piece she showed us was a Hans Hoffman, which I had admired before, but not retained the artist&#8217;s name &#8212; I <a href="http://www.dulceyheller.com/wordpress/looming-complete/" target="_self">loomed</a> a different piece of his.  She again said that he was a mature artist at his best, an abstract expressionist.  His shapes show relationship, foreground, background, are sculptural, alive, and not flat; exciting and dynamic paintings about painting.</p>
<p>Clifford Still was next, another abstract expressionist, this piece was darker, more gothic, but also about shape and color and pure painting.</p>
<p>Then Rothko, another pure painter.  He uses a couple of tones, careful brushstrokes.  There&#8217;s a hazy fuzziness, an ephemeral quality, floating shapes, hovering, misty &#8212; representing the unrepresentable.</p>
<p>The next room was Alternative Modernism, the action, performance paintings.  Not about controlled reason in the previous room, not about discipline.  The first painting here was by Shirago Kazuo.  He painted with his foot?!</p>
<p>Then an explosive poured painting by Herman Nitsch, done on burlap.</p>
<p>Progressing to the next gallery, there was a piece in the center of the floor called Direction.  It&#8217;s an elongated triangle of granite, smooth, but not polished.  A small compass is on the top near the wide end &#8212; north does not match with the pointing of the arrow of the granite.  It speaks of nature, the primitiveness of the sedentary rock (layers visible on the edges), found objects (compass), and is like poetry, showing space, direction, and time.</p>
<p>End of painting pieces were in the next room.  There is a white canvas with a vertical slash.  A white canvas torn in the middle.  Paintings as objects.</p>
<p>The next gallery has a piece by Yves Klein.  There&#8217;s a shallow pool that&#8217;s bright blue on the inside, and then blue body prints of nude women on the paper on the wall.  At the opening, he had the blue pool and blank paper on the wall.  His models created the prints at the opening.</p>
<p>There is a cabinet of Fluxus artists, something she didn&#8217;t cover in the other two sessions.  This is ephemeral art, seeing beauty in the world around you, noticing small things, art to the people, not in museums, art you participate in.  Things like mail art.  One was a postcard, and the writing on it is something like, &#8220;Your thumb on the side of this card is the realization of my intention.&#8221;  Another is a small plastic container, like a film canister, with a bean in it.  It is labelled, &#8220;Empty out the bean, put the cylinder to your ear.  Listen to the sea.&#8221;</p>
<p>We stopped next at a painting by Chris Ofil, a contemporary artist.  He&#8217;s African American, and went to Africa and came back inspired &#8212; and with elephant dung.  The painting is rich, bright colors, with a lot of black contrasts, geometric and psychedelic patterns, small photographs of faces, speaking to hip hop culture, language of the street.  There are rows of small dots &#8212; Dr. Briggs said it looked like beadwork.  <strong>Beadwork!</strong> In the center of the painting is a piece of elephant dung with an eye painted on it.  Instead of hanging on the wall, the painting is resting against the wall, on feet of elephant dung.</p>
<p>Dr. Briggs stopped next at a piece by Richard Prince, this pure, flat, gray painting, with a shape at the top.  There is currently an exhibit by him on display at the Walker, that we didn&#8217;t have time to see.  He&#8217;s known as doing art incorporating the Marlboro Man, masculine art.  She said she understands and likes this piece more now, after having seen the exhibition.  She said to think of the painting as half painting, half car &#8212; the shape looks like the hood of a car.</p>
<p>One of the stranger pieces is next.  It&#8217;s a small child&#8217;s resin chair, sitting over a drain, with a box of facial tissue on the seat of the chair with a cover over the box with flowers on a black background.  This is by Robert Gober, who makes a lot of things with drains in the them.  It&#8217;s to make you wonder what&#8217;s down there, to think about the building.  And the interest of the piece is the placement of the drain, chair, and kleenex.</p>
<p>David Weiss and Peter Fischli&#8217;s Wurst series is next, amusing photographs of posed vignettes with processed meats.  Dr. Briggs described a piece of theirs that she had seen that was a rotating turntable with a plastic cup anchored to it.  Next to the turntable was a flashlight, turned on, and she said there was a really interesting play of light on the wall as the cup moved through the beam of light.</p>
<p>Katherine Fritsch has a series of 4 objects placed in different cases in the room.  Poison bottle.  Snake.  Gold ball.  Silver ball.  Dr. Briggs thought of them as Platonic objects, outside of narrative, making you consider of what these pieces bring to mind.  Her response was fairly tales.</p>
<p>Mary Esch&#8217;s Riding Hood studies (drawings) were adjacent.  Not the sweet Disney version!</p>
<p>Julie Mehretu&#8217;s painting is a huge abstract piece with lines and action.  She&#8217;s interested in showing power, colonialization, history and the history of painting, globalization, migration, immigration.  There is layering, with graphic designer-like marks showing direction of movement through the underlaying plans that look architectural and like city plans.  This is about exploration, not self-expression.</p>
<p>The final piece was Carl Andre&#8217;s Slope.  It&#8217;s a black sidewalk coming part-way out into the room at an angle to the wall.  This is art you become part of, and Dr. Briggs said she had an epiphany when she first stood on it.  This is art with a different relationship to the public.  It&#8217;s reductive, not simple.</p>
<p>After the tour was over, I asked Dr. Briggs to point out the location of the James Turrell piece, Sky Pesher, that is installed in the new portion of the sculpture garden (yet to be installed, except for this piece).  She had talked about him in session 2; he&#8217;s a light artist, working with natural light.  It will be the end anchor of the new garden.  This is as it looks when you&#8217;re approaching it.</p>

<p>As you walk in, this is what you see.  This is concrete, black concrete for the seating area, white painted area above, with artificial uplights above the black of the concrete.  The seats are heated, and there is drainage under the edge of the bench.  To give you a sense of scale, a seated adult&#8217;s head is between 1/3 and 1/2 to the top of the black.  This is a square room, so there are benches on all sides, including both sides of the entrance.</p>

<p>And finally, the iconic piece of the existing sculpture garden, seen on many postcards for Minneapolis, Spoonbridge and Cherry, by  Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen.  There is a fountain in the stem of the cherry.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last week, I wrote about <a href="http://www.dulceyheller.com/wordpress/but-is-it-art-session-1/" target="_self">session 1</a>, with Dr. Patricia Briggs, from the <a href="http://www.mcad.edu/" target="_blank">Minneapolis College of Art and Design</a>.  It was about expressionism, abstractionism, the progression towards minimalism.  This session, she continued to move forward in time to help us understand contemporary art.  I took many more notes.  Again, all mistakes below are mine.</p>
<p>Dr. Briggs started with putting forth Donald Judd as a great example of minimalism.  His work shows the minimalist view that art is about expression, not self-expression.  It&#8217;s a radical outside of human-ness.  She again talked about Duchamp, where his art was not of the artist&#8217;s touch and hand.  She gave the example of in his welded pieces, he gave a welder instruction on construction.</p>
<p>She referenced again action painting like Pollock and Gutai, where painting is about a trace of performance.  This happened at about the same time as performance art got big.  At the Walker, there are some Yves Klein body prints &#8212; naked female torsos printed onto paper.  This is art that is an outcome of an activity.</p>
<p>Now, the aesthetic and anti-aesthetic tradition have been opposing each other in the 20th century.  The anti-aesthetic tradition is Dada, conceptualism, sometimes surrealism (which can have a foot in both camps).  Dada is the anti-art, that the beauty shown, if any, is convulsive beauty, the beauty of the abject, decay, beauty that hurts.  Dada includes making collages as art &#8212; something common now, but not then.  Making art of trash (found objects/modified found objects), art that goes out to the masses using low art, popular art such as mass media, photography.  The function is to uncover those things that you usually don&#8217;t think about.</p>
<p>Dr. Briggs talked about Raushenberg, who was influenced by Duchamp &#8212; and Merce Cunningham (dance choreographer who felt that dance should be more real than artificial ballet) and John Cage (a pianist who would sit at a piano and let the sound of the audience be the piece). Raushenberg painted a field of white, and the shadow you cast over the piece became part of it.  And if it got dirty, an assistant repainted it.  Rauschenberg had a piece that was erasing a piece of art that de Kooning drew.  She said it took him weeks to erase, that this was a collaboration between the artists, and that de Kooning drew something that would be hard to erase.  He progresses to assemblages (vs. collages); her example was Bed, made up of his quilt and pillow, altered.  The canvas is a flat tabletop, you put stuff on it, and the viewer processes it.</p>
<p>Neo-Dada uses expressionist paintbrush strokes, sometimes puts it next to collages, found objects, junk.  These expressionist paintbrush strokes are ironic, not expressionist.  Warhol was next on the neo-Dada agenda, about his appropriation of images to create art of the world.  She talked about his Marilyn Monroe images &#8212; they&#8217;re not about Marilyn, they&#8217;re about how the Hollywood machine makes puppets out of people, objectifying people.  Dr. Briggs said what&#8217;s brilliant about Warhol is that we like to look at it, unlike many other Dada and neo-Dada artists.</p>
<p>Using multiple texts is very post-modern.  There&#8217;s no difference between high art and advertising.  Multiple objects are pulled together, not necessarily to make a narrative.  Many post-modern artists appropriate images from many contexts.  Sherrie Levine is the apex of this, where she literally photographs other photographs, other paintings, and puts her name on it.  This is commentary on originality (there is nothing new under the sun), authority of ownership, a very post-modern thought.  To post-modern artists, the author is dead, all speaking is quotation, you can&#8217;t own an idea.  Other issues explored by post-modern artists is exploration of the body, and not pretty poses.  It&#8217;s a shift to art that doesn&#8217;t show the human body as a beautiful aesthetic, but physically clumsy things with vulnerabilities and openings.  Racial identity is another theme explored, art about people who don&#8217;t have a voice.</p>
<p>At the <a href="http://www.walkerart.org/index.wac" target="_blank">Walker</a> (the location of the next and last session), there is a lot of minimalism.  This is <strong>not</strong> where you go to find craft, beauty, to find something that makes you feel good.  Dr. Briggs is going to show us some of her favorite works.  I&#8217;ll let you know what they are&#8230;.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Tonight, I attended the first of 3 sessions taught by Patricia Briggs, PhD, Associate Professor of Liberal Arts at the <a href="http://www.mcad.edu/" target="_blank">Minneapolis College of Art and Design</a>.  The subtitle of the series is &#8220;Understanding contemporary art.&#8221;</p>
<p>I have no art history background, no art education.  Dr. Briggs gives an enjoyable, accessible lecture, and I learned a great deal.  Any errors below are mine.</p>
<p>She started with a discussion of the history of the <a href="http://www.walkerart.org/index.wac" target="_blank">Walker Art Museum</a>, which will be the location of the last meeting (she trains docents for the Walker).  It was a private collection in a home, then established in 1927 as the first public art gallery in the Upper Midwest.  In 1944, a new building and a new focus came together in the wake of MoMA, to recreate the Walker as a museum of modern art.  An addition in 2005 adds an architecturally postmodern wing to the modern building.</p>
<p>Dr. Briggs started with a discussion of the function of art.  Before literacy, it was propaganda for the church and state.  At the rise of the merchant class in the 17th century, different types of art emerged &#8212; landscapes, still lifes.</p>
<p>In the late 19th century, art moved away from narrative to art that is doing something else &#8212; expressive, abstraction; to colors and lines that don&#8217;t mimic nature.  Think the brush strokes and colors of Van Gogh.  These serve to suggest something, or make you feel something.</p>
<p>On to the early 20th century came the rise of conceptual and philosophical exploration such as Duchamp or Magritte.  Think surrealism or Dada.  Why is the picture and word of a pipe, a pipe?  How do we know that words and signs make meaning?  These conceptualists were creating a new audience for art, not entertaining, but art that was meant to make you think.  The expressionists and abstractionists were one group at this time, and these conceptualists were in another.</p>
<p>Dr. Briggs said that Duchamp was the most important artist of the 20th century, that in the Dada shadow of WWI, he thumbed his nose at art as bourgeois, that art should be political or shocking, and incite people to think, to challenge them.  Art is transforming meaning.  He was the beginning of post-modernism, bringing life and art together.  Duchamp spoke to a different audience; art of the formalist abstract expressionist tradition viewed art and life as separate, not for politics, not for commerce, not dirtied by life.</p>
<p>The Modern view is that arts&#8217; function is to produce discourse, dialog, discussion of ideas and feelings.</p>
<p>Dr. Briggs went on to discuss abstractionism, usually associated with expressionism, often thought to be the natural progression of art.  She showed us examples of paintings by various artists such as Gauguin, Van Gogh, where the paintings became flatter (less depth of field).  She described expressionism as a way of painting, where color, shapes, and forms were more important than the subject matter.  The progression was away from naturalism towards abstractionism.</p>
<p>She termed Kandinsky as a different type of Expressionist, a major shift to just abstract forms with <strong>no</strong> narrative.  This is art that is meant to speak to emotions, like music it is intended to wash over you.  Pure abstraction, no form.</p>
<p>In the 1920&#8217;s, Mondrian had a philosophical outlook, that if you surrounded people by soothing, calming art, we&#8217;d be a better people and a better world.  Art should produce an effect.</p>
<p>Her example of pure abstraction was Hans Hoffman.  Hans Hoffman!  His work is what I loomed <a href="http://www.dulceyheller.com/wordpress/looming-complete/" target="_self">here</a>.  Now I know a bit more about him, more than what I read in the <a href="http://eyelevel.si.edu/2008/02/different-strok.html" target="_blank">Smithsonian blog entry</a> that interested me in his work.  Dr. Briggs had a high school art teacher that introduced her to Hans Hoffman.  Her description of his work is &#8220;form is plastic.&#8221;  There is push and pull, blurry vs hard edges.  Shapes and forms are supposed to dance in front of you, enliven, be plastic.  She finds every one of his works &#8220;exciting.&#8221;</p>
<p>She went on to talk about Color Field painters, those painters who make monstrous, mural-sized paintings of one (or very few) colors.  Big blocks of colors.  These are meant to create an environment for you.  You place yourself in front of one of these big paintings, and it can take you somewhere.</p>
<p>Okay, so if the progression  of painting is towards flat monochrome paintings, is painting dead?  Are we done?  Now, we&#8217;re on to Minimalism, a new direction.  There is no intended connection with spirit, or emotion.  It is painting as an object, not a metaphor for anything.  This is form as pure object.  Ad Reinhardt was one of her examples of this &#8212; he painted black canvas after black canvas.  A painting is a painting.  That&#8217;s it.</p>
<p>Minimalism makes us self-conscious, it doesn&#8217;t say anything, it&#8217;s just a thing.  It talks about the space you&#8217;re in, calls to us in a different physical way.  These massive minimalist paintings or sculptures?  They are intended to be the <strong>only</strong> thing in the room.  There is no evidence of the artist&#8217;s hand.  This is conceptual art.</p>
<p>Another progression was to formal abstraction.  This can be like performance art, a record of the moving body &#8212; i.e., Pollock.  Art and life together.  Art as a stage for the moving body.</p>
<p>And, that was the end of this session.  I&#8217;m an exuberant note taker.  Can you tell?!  I&#8217;ll write more next week, after the next session.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Okay, there&#8217;s a story here:  I had a <a href="http://www.dulceyheller.com/ancientromans.html" target="_blank">piece</a> accepted into Beadwork&#8217;s <a href="http://www.interweave.com/bead/events/BeadedFigure.asp" target="_blank">The Beaded Figure</a>, their 2005 juried show.  I was lamenting that none of the show&#8217;s touring locations were near where I lived, and good friends in Manhattan invited me to stay with them so I could see my piece in the show, in January 2005 at its opening location at the <a href="http://www.madmuseum.org/" target="_blank">Museum of Art and Design</a>.  As a thank you present to Bruno, I made a duct tape wallet; Marya got jewelry.  While I stood there, he emptied out his wallet and filled his new duct tape wallet, and he&#8217;s been using it ever since.</p>
<p>Fast forward more than 3 years, and the wallet&#8217;s bottom has finally torn, and he requested another.  So, here&#8217;s a brief outline on how to make a duct tape wallet:</p>
<p>First, make the &#8220;fabric&#8221; for the wallet.  This is where you can lose a lot of tape fast &#8212; sticky side to sticky side is a bit tricky at first, you can&#8217;t peel it up and start over.  If you want to play with duct tape and make something, I recommend starting with the less expensive gray tape rather than the colored tape.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s a good idea to have a leather wallet on hand to check construction details.  For example, the inside layer needs to be shorter than the outside layer so that it will close and stay flat.  Bruno&#8217;s wallet is the black one, I made the blue one a while ago, and it&#8217;s on hand for a fun last-minute gift.  To get to this point, I&#8217;ve cut the fabric with scissors, and taped the bottoms together, inside and out.  At this open spot, I&#8217;ve encased the edge with more duct tape.</p>

<p>A view of the inside &#8212; the right side has been taped on the inside, the left has not.  This is both for strength and so your money doesn&#8217;t stick inside.</p>

<p>All cut edges enclosed &#8212; working on the top now.  I&#8217;ll carefully trim off the overhang after I fold it.  These encasing pieces are half-width of the tape, which is a pain to cut.  People who do a lot of duct tape things buy tape in different widths.  I make do.  So, I put the machine-cut edge on the outside, and my scissors-chewed edge on the inside.</p>

<p>The inside of the blue wallet, and Bruno&#8217;s wallet done except for the pockets, which are ready to go.  I&#8217;ve encased the top edge with another color, both for fun and so you can see the edge of the pocket easily.  His last wallet was black with hot pink edges.</p>

<p>Top pockets on.  Pockets are attached inside and out with half-widths of tape.  This can get awkward.</p>

<p>First, change the shed, and made sure the warps are separated, one of each warp pair in front, and one in back.  I tend to use my fingers between the warps to fix this.  I have read that some use a ruler, or try to strum the warps to separate.  They must strum quite hard!</p>

<p>Now pick up more beads.  There&#8217;s just a couple of each color, so I&#8217;m doing fewer beads on this needle.  I go back in the warps at the same place where I came out, and continue between the warps past where these beads will fill the warps.</p>

<p>They didn&#8217;t go in their places automatically, so I push them in between their assigned warps.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.cce.umn.edu/splitrockarts/">Split Rock</a> has turned 25!  And, registration opens today.</p>
<p>It used to be at the University of Minnesota - Duluth, which is where I attended two different workshops, the first led by Joyce Scott, and the second by <a href="http://www.davidchatt.com/">David Chatt</a>.  They were hugely rewarding, invigorating, and challenging.  You check in Sunday night, work/create all day Monday through Friday, and go home after breakfast on Saturday.  There&#8217;s a meet-the-teacher event (Tuesday?), an open studio night (Thursday?), and a great (hilly!) campus and city to explore.  I keep looking to see if there&#8217;s another that I could take.</p>
<p>Split Rock moved to the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis campus.  This is my metro area, so both more convenient &#8212; and less of a retreat.  There are 3 workshops this summer that caught my eye.</p>
<p>Karen Searle is teaching a &#8220;short&#8221; (not the full week) in June, Creative Adornments in Knit and Crochet.  From her <a href="http://www.karensearle.com/">website</a>:</p>

<p align="left">She judged something I entered once, and I met her in passing.  She has a fabulous reputation as a teacher.</p>
<p align="left">Another that looks interesting is Making the Ordinary, Extraordinary: Hand Felted Scarves by Chad Alice Hagen.  I kind of like taking the idea of something that appears narrow in focus, and spending a week exploring it.  Here&#8217;s an example from his <a href="http://www.chadalicehagen.com/">website</a>:</p>

<p align="left">The other one that caught my eye was Digital Nature Photography: A Retreat.  This one is taught by Craig Blacklock at the Cloquet Forestry Center, a campus for the University of Minnesota a bit southwest of Duluth.  This is a beautiful area, and Blacklock is a well-known outdoor photographer specializing in the North Shore (the Minnesota shore of Lake Superior). <p align="left">I&#8217;m not going this year, but I&#8217;ll keep watching for another class.  It is well worth it!</p>
