I just listened to a 10 minute podcast from NPR’s All Things Considered entitled “When Did We Become Mentally Modern?” The argument is that it’s not when we began walking upright, but when we began to think in symbols. And beads have a starring role as an example. Click below to listen, or read the story on the NPR website.

Sounds like the name of a piece of art, doesn’t it? Nope, it is what it is. I had an idea which entailed draping layers of right angle weave (which is why there are three rectangles of right angle weave). The rope is twisted herringbone. I’m trying again, this time with brick stitch and square stitch. Next attempt, peyote?!

And the source of these beads is a lovely master hank. These are 12’s, so there are 15 hanks in a master hank. It is a lovely thing to look at resting on my work table!

Good Quill Hunting is running a beading contest where haute couture fashion is the inspiration for a piece of beadwork, which is to be mainly seed beads. There is a growing list of prizes, and the deadline for entering the photograph of your piece is November 20th. Pick any one of 36 images of wild and fun fashions as your inspiration. “Go bold, go bright, use your imagination…”

He takes much better pictures (this really should be on a background), but isn’t this bead beautiful? Brent Graber recently made many hearts as a fund-raiser for some surgery he needed, as an uninsured artist. Maybe after the Muse project, I will look at my supplies for stringing ideas. Or go shopping for some cords and ribbon?

These lovely beads have been sitting out for maybe as long as a year. I’m not longer going to use them as intended, and I needed to clean up my workspace.

I still want to use these beads someday, although maybe not all of them!
