This article, from the Edmonton Journal (Alberta, Canada) was written by Elizabeth Withey, who “wanted to know: Do the arts exist in Alberta jails?” She visited three federal prisons, and writes about Pathways, a program used to connect the aboriginal prisoners to their traditional cultural practices — including beadwork. Highlighted is prisoner Richard Moosewah, who discusses his beadwork and how it helps him.

Scott Schuldt has some of his beadwork on display at the Maude Kerns Art Center in Eugene, Oregon. “Scott Schuldt’s artwork is remarkably wide-ranging, encompassing statements of political and social import created by painstakingly embroidering beads on canvas, as well as more conceptual pieces that document the waterways around Seattle and explore nature in an urban setting.” The exhibit ends August 27th, and there is a panel discussion on August 18th.

Five scientists in Taiwan have a wonderful blog, The Beaded Molecules : the wonderful world of beaded fullerenes, where they show examples of how they use spherical beads to represent represent chemical bonds. Their recent blog post includes pdfs of two articles that they have written — one written in Chinese two years ago, and one just published in English in The Journal of the Chinese Chemical Society. Click on the various promising molecule names in the column on the right in the blog for some wonderful shapes.

Smithsonian American Art Museum

The Smithsonian American Art Museum is in a beautiful building (as seem to be all of the museums in Washington, D.C.), and has a captivating array of art.

There’s Georgia O’Keefe:

The gentleman from D.C. who made an aluminum foil altar in his garage (Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations’ Millennium General Assembly, by James Hampton):

A giraffe made of bottle caps:

And much, much more! The other wing/side of the Museum is the National Portrait Gallery, also a wonderful visit. The Chuck Close of President Clinton was immediately recognizable as a Close. The life mask and hands of Abraham Lincoln were an honor to see.

Not in this museum, but nearby on the Mall, is this house by Roy Lichtenstein, which changes its perspective as you move around it:

Marcus Amerman at the Heard Museum

The Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona just opened an exhibit entitled “Pop! Popular Culture in American Indian Art.” For the exhibit, “pop culture and innovation collide with traditional art forms and cultures in artwork that reflects contemporary issues and imagery in an often comedic, tongue-in-cheek way. Fashion, graffiti art, comics, pottery and beadwork are formats for contemporary American Indian artists who incorporate imagery from popular culture into their work.” Marcus Amerman has a few of his pieces included. The exhibit will be open through April 2011.
