is very, very small! I was on a flight yesterday, sitting next to a gentleman reading a book. We exchanged hellos, then he read, and I napped and then beaded (picture in a later entry). While we were waiting to deplane, he commented on my beading, and sounded a bit knowledgeable. He said he knew someone who beaded, had a website, sold patterns online. I asked who it was, thinking that I might know the beader, and I do! Our shared beading acquaintance is Pat Savu. Pat is the local coordinator for the Bead Quilt, we’ve exchanged emails, and we’ve met in person once or twice (I think, sorry if I got that wrong, Pat).

My seatmate works with Pat. It was very fun.

Making designer jewelry with hardware, gems, and beads

Okay, I want to go to the hardware and/or surplus store again! This brand new book is great fun. I have used rubber grommets, rubber O-rings, and pyrex connectors as parts of jewelry — and seen cotter pins and other non-jewelry components used in jewelry. The author of this book, Nichole Noelle Sherman, has a collection called Softhardwear, which she describes in depth in this book with many examples. Some pieces are heavier than what I’d wear, but still fun to look at. Check it out at your library, maybe….

A half dozen or so people I know participated in this exhibition, put on by the Beadin’ Path in Freeport, Maine. Everyone started with the same white plastered paper mask, and look at the results!

This artist from Belgium has some great pieces. Check out her blog; in the upper left she has some instructions (Mes schémas), both for sale and free. Her strawberry and spiral beaded bead are just phenomenal.

Her recent post, of spiral flat square stitch earrings, prompted me to make my own. Hers are better — she’s better at this stitch, and I used more irregular beads. I still like mine quite a bit though. These beads remind me of Black Hills gold, which is gold jewelry marketed/sold from the Black Hills of western South Dakota, and contains rose gold, green gold, and yellow gold (and to be marketed as Black Hills gold, has to include the leaf motif, I believe).

Okay, I went looking too. I found some on the website for the Mid America Arts Alliance touring shows. Joyce is modeling her necklace in slide 12 of a select few images from her show Kickin’ It.

At the top of the linked page above, you’ll find a link to a 114 page programming guide to this show. Only one image, but there are titles of each of the pieces included in Kickin’ It, including commentary on some.

Kickin’ It was at the Tacoma Museum of Glass. Here is a video of an interview with Joyce.

She’s an inspiring woman, a great teacher, and I’m very glad I got to spend a week with her.

Reading Mary Tafoya’s blog, she and Chris Prussing found images of some of Joyce Scott’s work online. Joyce doesn’t have a website, so this is a treat!

Mary interviewed Joyce for the December 2003 issue of Beadwork, if you have access to this magazine. I took a weeklong class from Joyce at Split Rock Arts in Minnesota in 2003, I believe. A beaded figure that I made after the class is here.

Jack and Linda Fifield

I looked at a copy of American Style magazine today, and listed on the cover is “Craft Collaborators Jack and Linda Fifield.” I thought the names looked familiar, turned to the article — and yes, they should be familiar, I have her name on my links page of my website. They are both woodturners, and she is a beader in addition, adding beadwork to turned vessels. The description in the article of her beadwork was written by someone who doesn’t bead, “She threads tiny Czech glass beads onto nylon filaments that cross, making a net to encase a form.” It’s peyote, beautifully done.

A current project that she’s working on is a vessel Jack turned, 4 FEET tall, “the whopper.” Linda has been working on it a year, and is one-third done.
