Cabled herringbone

The February 2009 issue of Bead & Button has instructions for cabled herringbone, designed by Rae Arlene Reller.  Herringbone is one of my favorite stitches, and I found this very appealing, so I gave it a shot.  The blue and purple are French 10’s, fat beads.  I increased the width of the herringbone stitch by adding the matte green ab 15s in the center of the stitch.  While I think the effect of adding the color is very good, tying the contrasting green edging into the darker blue and purple, the stitch itself won’t work this way.  The width of the stitch with the fat beads and the added 15 is too big to cable smoothly, and it won’t curve well around a wrist.  I really love the opal blue and purple with the opaque charteuse ab bead, and I have the purple in a 13, but not the blue.  I’ll try again, with a different color combination and different bead sizes.

  1. Like you, I had to try this one. I discovered that using similar colors in the center was not a good idea for the first try. Love the look of it.
